Primary duties and responsibilities:
- Develop and execute sound operational procedures pertaining to solid waste management.
- Manage work that are contracted out by the Authority, as well as work executed directly by the employees of the Authority.
- Direct investigation into the cause of public complaints, on a timely basis.
- Direct and coordinate, through subordinate personnel, activities to obtain optimum use of equipment, vehicles, facilities and personnel within the Operations and Landfill Units.
- Ensure that landfills are operated in accordance with acceptable standards.
- Responsible for the training of technical staff.
- Assist with preparation of Board papers and budgets.
- Liaise with the Communication Manager in order to ensure that the necessary information concerning waste minimisation are incorporated into the public relations and education activities of the Authority. Also to ensure accuracy of information/data provided.
- Provide management support to technical and construction projects at the landfill site.
- Provide a safe and healthful working environment and system of work in collaboration with the Environmental Health & Safety Officer.
- Ensure construction of landfill site facilities comply to established laws, principles, international standards and procedures.
- Recommend capital expenditures for the acquisition of new equipment which would increase efficiency and services of the Authority.
The successful applicant should possess the following minimum qualification and experience:
Minimum Qualification and Experience
- Master’s degree in the relevant field of Engineering, Environmental Science or Environmental Studies with equivalent qualifications in operations management as an asset or
- Bachelor’s degree in the relevant field of Engineering, Environmental Science or Environmental Studies with 10 years relevant working experience.
- Knowledge of management and control of waste collection and disposal.
- Knowledge of the rules and regulations governing environmental safety, on waste management rules.
- Ability to develop, implement, evaluate and manage sustainable waste management programmes.
- Flexibility and ability to adapt to changes in environmental realities.
- Creativity in finding solutions to effective waste management.
- Computer literate
- Excellent verbal and written communication
